What A Weirdo – Podcast Segment

|

If you’ve been tuning into Distressed to Joyful; Bailey’s Way podcast regularly, you may remember the “What A Weirdo” segment that I introduced during Season 2. While I’ve discussed the purpose of this segment plenty of times on the show, I wanted to take a moment to dive a little deeper into why I created this segment…

First of all, we all have some sort of “weird” habit that we participate in on a regular basis. And yes, we all includes YOU! But here’s the thing.. The more I randomly talk about my weirdo habits with friends, colleagues and strangers, the more I learn that I’m not so different than everyone else. In fact, lots of people have the same weird habits that I do, though I used to think that it was just me who did these things!

Not only is it a relief to know that I’m, in fact, not weird for doing these things, but it’s also comforting to know that while everyone is striving to be original and unique these days, we are all still so similar at the core.

Connection: The energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.

Brene Brown

Have you ever been sitting with a group of friends and during the conversation, you decided to share something about yourself that you’ve kept private as you think that it may sound odd to others? But when you shared it, instead of getting strange looks from the group like you thought might happen, you received responses such as “yeah, me too!” or “dude, I feel you!“? Responses such as this are so valuable as they are connecting us to each other. They are showing us that while we thought we might have been alone in our weirdness, we instead share similar behaviors with those around us.

And while sharing something a little personal might feel scary, I promise you it will be worth it. As humans, we need connection with others to survive – it’s built into our DNA! One of my favorite authors, Brene Brown, discusses this topic in depth and I’ve learned so much about the importance of connecting with others from reading her works. I encourage that you read her book, The Gifts of Imperfection, to further grasp an understanding on the importance of connecting with others.

Now that we’ve scratched the surface on the importance of connecting with our peers, let’s talk a little bit more about Distressed to Joyful: Bailey’s Way podcast segment: What A Weirdo!

This segment was created for a few reasons…

  1. To bring a little more connection to the world! I chose to share all of my weirdo habits first because I can’t expect you to want to share and connect without extending an invitation from myself first. By choosing to share the things that I do which I feel might be weird, I’m giving you and the podcast audience a chance to say to yourself, “me too!” or “dude, I feel you!” And while we might not know each other on a personal level, there is comfort in knowing that a behavior of yours that you deemed weird is actual not so weird after all. That other people do it too.
  2. To add some wholesome laughter at the end of each episode! The topics I discuss on the podcast are sometimes a little heavy, so it’s nice to end on a happy note with laughter all around. I mean, who doesn’t love to laugh?! You know what they say… “Laughter is the best medicine!
  3. To allow YOU the chance to be featured on the show! I’m all about sharing and giving others a chance to speak and be heard. If you would like to share your weirdo habit and have it featured on the show, I’m more than happy to give you credit via your name or a nickname. At the same time, I full understand and respect privacy, so I’ve provided a way for you to send in your submissions anonymously. Regardless of whether or not you’d like to share your name, I give my input while reading your habit and tell you if it’s something that I participate in, or if I know someone who does. If you chose to be anonymous, this is a fun way to find out how connected you are to me and my peers!

So… what are you waiting for?! Head on over to the What A Weirdo! submission form or use the form below to send in your weirdo habits today! The form allows for you to leave your name, nickname or chose to be anonymous. If you’d like feedback or to stay in touch, please include your email address, although this is not required.

I’m looking forward to hearing about YOUR weirdo habits and sharing them on the show! I’m betting that you and I have more in common than you may think… 😉

This photo is showing one of my weirdo habits – climbing on things! Especially statues in parks. Hopefully I don’t get in trouble for this one day!
