Grow Your Hair Naturally: My Secret Coconut Oil Hair Mask

|

Hey there, beautiful souls! It’s Bailey here — and if you’ve been struggling with slow hair growth, dryness, or just feel like your hair has lost its shine, I’ve so been there.

But guess what? I finally found something that actually works — and it’s been around for centuries. In this post (and the video below), I’m sharing my all-time favorite natural hair treatment that completely transformed my hair from shoulder length to past-my-butt gorgeous.

It’s simple, budget-friendly, and straight out of an ancient Indian beauty tradition that my husband introduced me to: the coconut oil hair mask.

Why Coconut Oil is a Total Game-Changer

Hair oiling has been part of Indian culture for generations — and once you try it, you’ll totally understand why. It’s not just about having shiny hair; it’s about nourishing your scalp so your hair can thrive from the roots up.

When I massage coconut oil into my scalp, two amazing things happen:

1. It wakes up your hair roots.
That gentle scalp massage boosts blood flow and stimulates your follicles, telling your hair to get growing!

2. It deeply hydrates.
Coconut oil is like a tall glass of water for your scalp. It helps fight dryness, flakiness, and itchiness while making every strand feel silky and soft.

Doing this just once a week has completely changed my hair health, shine, and length — and it can do the same for you!

What You’ll Need for Your DIY Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Here’s what I grab before starting my weekly hair-oiling ritual:

  • Coconut Oil: I use Parachute brand — a staple in Indian households and super easy to find online or at your local Indian grocery store (bonus points for shopping local!).
  • An “Oil Pillow”: If you’re sleeping in the mask (which I totally recommend), lay an old pillowcase or towel over your pillow to protect your nice bedding.
  • Old Clothes: Wear something comfy you don’t mind getting a little oily. A button-down shirt works great if you’re doing this during the day.

Plenty of Shampoo: You’ll need more than usual to get the oil out — so don’t start this if you’re down to your last few drops!

Step-by-Step: How I Apply My Coconut Oil Hair Mask

1. Prep Like a Pro

  • Warm the Oil: Since coconut oil solidifies at room temperature, I place the closed bottle under hot running water for a few minutes until it melts.
  • Start with Dry Hair: Make sure your hair is completely dry and free from product buildup.
  • Brush It Out: Detangle first (trust me, this makes the whole process so much smoother).

2. Apply the Magic

  • Focus on Your Scalp: Slowly pour or scoop the oil onto your scalp and massage it in with your fingertips. This is where the magic happens — the scalp massage stimulates growth!
  • Don’t Be Stingy: If you have a dry scalp like I do, go for it. “Less is not more” when it comes to hydration.
  • Coat the Ends: Rub some oil between your hands and smooth it through your mid-lengths and ends so they stay hydrated and strong.

3. Secure and Soak

Now let the oil do its thing!

  • Overnight (my favorite): Sleep in your mask so it can fully absorb while you dream.
    • For long hair: braid it and wrap it into a bun on top of your head.
    • For short hair: a quick top knot works perfectly.
  • Daytime Option: Leave it on for at least 2–3 hours if you can’t sleep in it (a great excuse to pamper yourself while watching Netflix).

Washing It Out (The Trickiest Part!)

This step is where a lot of people get stuck — but don’t worry, I’ve perfected the method.

Here’s my go-to wash routine:

1. Shampoo
2. Conditioner
3. Shampoo again

If your hair still feels oily afterward, just do one more quick shampoo rinse. It’s worth it! Once it’s fully dry, your hair will feel softer, smoother, and so much healthier. My favorite shampoo to use is OGX Coconut Miracle Oil – it may seem a little redundant, however I’ve found that it does an excellent job of removing excess oil without completely stripping your scalp of it.

My Weekly Ritual

I do this coconut oil hair mask every single week, and it’s honestly the reason my hair is stronger, longer, and shinier than ever. It’s self-care, it’s tradition, and it’s totally transformative.
